Love
Rare are the nights during which we sleep with a clear mind and thinking of
nothing but the pleasure and delight supplied through the closure of our eyes. The
torturing hours that separate the eyelid from the eyelid are a daily need when it comes to
love.
Let’s define love or at least try to:
Love, in dictionaries, is defined as affection, enthusiasm, passion...Etc, but much as these
words get close to the meaning of love they scarcely reach to the essence.
Love cannot be described as something static or be given a single word meaning because
the details entailed in love are infinite.
Physically, love is noticed when a person starts feeling a flow of a new matter in his
body. With every lover’s heart pump a vivid matter flows through the arteries and the
veins that the lover then feels ecstasy. Love sometimes entails a feeling of numbness in
the limbs so a person feels that his hand or feet are tingling. In addition, love can be
noticed if someone’s cheeks are constantly red or his acts include hyperactivity; in some
cases it could be hypo-activity. These, basically, are the physical traits of a lover; of
coarse physicals might entail many more traits.
Mentally, or psychologically, a lover feels the absence of his mind –actually he doesn’t
sense that but others around him do-, a constant need of seeing his loved one , hearing her
voice , touching her hand , and many other acts that bring great delight and joy to him.
Others define love as a combination of sentiments such as trust, loyalty, companionship,
(freedom)... etc. Or love is defined on a sexual basis and it is the passion and the desire
. The best definition is the one which combines all of the above
because love is a very strong sentiment that does combine all the sentiments listed above
-and adds to them a certain flavor- and it does have sexual sides because love entails
desire; but love shouldn’t be about sex because then it is merely superficial lets say it
should be 90% feelings and emotions and 10% desire.
There could be much more symptoms of love but I guess for starters these are adequate
and this definition is a simple introduction to love in general.
Let’s consider another aspect of love:
Lovers say that when they are with the ones they love, the feel that all the problems in the
world have been solved, all their worries have vanished, and nothing exists but them in
the infinitely expanding universe. This might be true because emotion and feelings can
overwhelm the logic of the mind and manipulate the dimensions of reality to create a –
more ecstatic- different existence. But here I ask a question, could love be a placebo??!
A placebo is a type of medication that involves no medicine – that is if we consider
psychology out of the boundaries of medicine- at all. It is treating the patient with
medicine like material which is merely a tablet of sugar but colored pink so that it looks
like a medicine. This medication, the placebo, creates a sense of self satisfaction for the
patients and sometimes it leads to the full healing of the patients due to powers of the
brain. For example a case of cancer was treated with a placebo, the patients tumor
decreased in size till when he was told that the medicine is a placebo, he died. So can
love truly be a placebo?
This hypothesis is not far from reality considering the following. When lovers feel
overwhelmed by life and see darkness surrounding them, they see the solution of their
problems in talking to the ones they love and indeed after talking to the one they love
they feel a lot better. So where does the feeling come from? Where from does this
ecstatic sensation originate?
Considering physical aspects, the origins of sensations are often referred to as the
secretion of hormones that induce a certain reaction that we spot as heating up or
confusion or anything else. The physical attraction towards another individual is
concurrent with the increase of the level of certain pheromones that are differentiated into
many different levels of attraction. So a certain level of pheromones would indicate a
certain level of attraction. So if this is true can we just relate love to hormone increase?
The answer is no. Although the levels increase, there must be an excitation of certain
sensory organs to induce the release of pheromones from endocrine glands. So what is
this organ? What organ does love refer to?
Let’s study some cases.
1- A person is sitting on a bench in a park and he sees the one he loves
approaching. His heart starts beating faster, he wonders if he should kiss her
when she comes or hug her or just shake her hand, he than plans again the
course of his date although he has been imagining the date for a week. All the
verbs used in the previous scene refer to the mind “wonders, imagines, plans”
except for heart beats faster but beating faster could be explained by the need
of more oxygen for the brain so that there is sufficient supply for the brain to
maintain its functions. Hence can we deduce that love purely relates to the
mind??
2- A grumpy old man who has never loved in his life, all he cares about is his
food, clothes, farm, house and all his belongings. Then suddenly he meets a
woman and he loses all his logic. He becomes irresponsible, immature, and
very tense and starts working his way to get to her heart. Does this mean that
love is purely spiritual?
3- A married couple that have divorced. They were married because they love
each other but after three or four years they just breakup. What do all these
cases mean?
The logical conclusion in this case is that in life Mind and Spirit co-exist on the tips
of a balance. Once a person tilts the balance to one side the other side will tilt in the
other way. So when the love load increases, the load of the mind proportionally
decreases. I believe love highly does relate to the brain and it originates for the
narrow spaces between the neurons but it is not purely the brain for it has a spiritual
side. The spiritual side can be clearly seen as when a person likes a girl to be blonde,
blue eyes, beautiful body but when it comes to love he falls in love with a tan, dark
hair, dark eyes, not Miss World type of a girl. So let’s conclude something that all
symptoms of love relate to logic except for love it self it something illogical. It is a
proof of the co-existence of Mind and Spirit for without mind we can’t have the
symptoms and without spirit love just doesn’t exist. Hence love is from the brain but
yet the brain is motivated by the heart. In other words, the brain regulates the function
of the heart but then the heart can set a limit to the function of the brain! The human
being is a mystery very hard to solve; it is a combination of matter and non-matter.
So what is love ? is it the emotion? or is it the symptoms ? Love is both, love is a gift from god.!
